Havana Extension - Add on to any of our Cuba Tours

If you have time, we highly recommend spending an extra two days in Havana, the most beautiful and enigmatic city in the Caribbean.  While our main tours include an introduction to old Havana, Vedado and Miramar, our extension digs deeper into the fabric of the city.

A vast array of architectural styles, a city that is modern yet somehow lost in time, Havana has layers upon layers to unpeel. One of the world’s great historic cities, and today the vibrant home for over two million, Havana is replete with monuments, museums, fine arts, rich history and splendid architecture.  Join us to visit the both the must-see places as well as many hidden corners of this enchanting metropolis.

Day 1

Parque Historico Militar Morro-Cabana, Casablanca, Regla and Old Havana

The morning starts with a short drive under the bay to the Parque Historico Militar Morro-Cabana comprised of two massive fortresses which together are the biggest defense complex built by the Spanish in the Americas.  After marveling at the construction and magnificence of these forts and learning of their history, we continue to Casablanca and the 50’ tall marble statue of Christ sculpted by Cuban Jima Madera.  Then it’s a short ferry ride across the harbor back to old Havana to transfer to another short ferry ride to Regla.  Once a fishing village, it is now a center of Santeria, one of Cuba’s more popular Afro-Cuban religions. We visit the fine municipal museum and the beautiful Church of Our Lady of Regla.  It’s home to the black Virgen of Regla which is the Catholic counterpart to Yemaya, who in the Santeria religion is the goddess of water.

We return by ferry to old Havana for lunch near the waterfront.  Then it’s off to the House of Rum to learn about the rum-making process, the history of rum and its importance to the Cuban economy.  Next up is the National Museum of Fine Arts with superb displays of Cuban art.

After dinner, for those with energy, there’s plenty of options for a night out to explore the place of music in Cuban culture.

Day 2

Classic Car Garage, Cigar Factory, Fusterlandia and Museum of the Revolution

We start the day visiting a garage where classic cars are restored.  See the magic that has kept thousands of cars from the 1940’s and 50’s on the roads.  If on a weekday, we then visit a cigar factory to learn how they’re made and the extensive and long process it takes to go from farm to store.  Then we’re off to Fusterlandia, the whimsical creation of artist Jose Fuster who was inspired by the works of Gaudy and Picasso.  We see his home and gallery, as well as the neighborhood filled with his brightly colored tile mosaics.

After lunch we go to the Museum of the Revolution, housed in the 1920-built palace of former president Fulgencio Batista, and decorated by Tiffany's of New York. From the museum, we walk to the Edificio Bacardi, one of the finest examples of art deco design anywhere.  We continue with a walk through the back streets of old Havana to the Mercado San Jose, an old warehouse building on the bay converted into an arts and crafts market and the perfect place to find a souvenir before heading home.  Dinner at a local paladar.
